It finally
looks like the weather is going to cooperate!
Warmer temperatures and no rain will have everyone outside this weekend
and those of you starting the home buying search will inevitably end up at an
open house or two. Here are a few tips.
Don’t make any big
purchases! Are you really thinking you may be
buying a house this year? Now is not
the time to buy a new car, furniture or anything else that is not a cash
purchase. It can affect your credit
score and potentially hurt your ability to get a mortgage.
Don’t talk too much! You are going to walk into the front door of the open house
and be greeted (accosted, drooled on, grabbed) by the agent hosting the open. Keep this in mind, its important; they don’t represent you. Do be polite, social (most Realtors are
human) and yes sign their register and no, you are not Fred Flintstone, Joe
Smith, etc. Believe or not, we have seen
that once or twice before. Specifically,
you don’t want to talk about how much you love the house, you just won the Mega
Ball, your Auntie died and left you
money……..
For Sale by Owner? You walk in the door you absolutely love it! It’s perfect! You are writing them a check to
give them a deposit to hold it for you; NOooooooooooooooo STOP! You want a certified third party to hold that
escrow check, not the seller. You would
also NOT buy a for sale by owner without a Realtor or an attorney representing
you and not Uncle Joe, esq. the patent attorney. You would want one that practices in the
residential real estate field.
Bring your parents with you? Save yourself the headache and take them to brunch instead. You’ll thank me later. My wife’s parents liked our first home. My parents; my mother cried and my father
said I was a jack-ass if we bought that house.
Wisely, I brought them through after the ink was dry, hee-haw and yes,
we still live there today. Unless your
parents have bought or sold a house in the last couple of years, their advice
will be based upon their last real estate experience, which will not match what
is happening in today’s market.
Most
importantly, have fun. Take notes about
what you like. You should be thinking
about what are three most important features you must have. Do you like the area? How far will it take you to get to work.
